Seeing The Land From The Sea: Encounter Moments On The Steamship As A Chronotope In Modern Turkish Short Stories

Zaman ve mekân, kurguya dayalı metinlerin yapısı incelenirken dikkate alınan
temel unsurlardan olagelmiştir. Kurguda anlatılanların ne zaman ve nerede
geçtiğinin tespiti metnin anlamlandırılması veya bir bağlama oturtulması
açısından önem arz eder. Mihail Bahtin kurguya dayalı metinlerin varoluş
biçimini tartışırken zaman ve mekân unsurlarına farklı ve derinlikli bir rol
yükler. Zira onun kronotop düşüncesinde zaman ve mekânın birlikteliğiyle
oluşan odaklar etrafında kurgu değerlendirilmektedir. Bahtin kurguyu temelden
etkileyen kronotoplardan ve kurguyu yönlendiren kronotoplardan söz etmektedir.
Karşılaşma kronotopu da kurguyu yönlendiren, bir dönemeç etkisine sahip olan
kronotoplardandır. Bu çalışma, Bahtin’in kronotop kavramından hareketle
modern Türk edebiyatında vapurlarda geçen öyküleri karşılaşma kronotopu
açısından ele almaktadır. Modern Türk öyküsünde sıkça görülen vapurlar,
insanları bir zaman dilimi içinde beraber tutan sınırlı mekânlar olma özelliği
açısından Mihail Bahtin’in kronotop kavramı etrafında incelemeyi mümkün
kılmaktadır. Çalışmada karşılaşmadan kastedilen, vapurun limandan ayrılırken
veya limana yanaşırken mekânla karşılaştığı andır. Burada odaklanılan mesele ise
Bahtin’in metin içinde dönemeçleri oluşturduğunu iddia ettiği karşılaşma
kronotopu bağlamında vapurun dışındaki mekânla vapurda karşı karşıya gelme
anının kurguyu nasıl etkilediğidir. Makalede bu karşılaşma anının öyküde
kurucu veya değiştirici bir etkiye sahip olma eğilimi 20. yüzyılda kaleme alınmış
olan Türk öykülerinden hareketle tartışılmaktadır. Bu amaçla çalışma Bahtin’in
kurguda kronotopun gerçeğe yakın veya gerçeklikten uzak olabileceği görüşünü
kabul etmekle beraber karşılaşma kronotopunu gerçeğe yakın biçimde işleyen
öykülere yer vermekte, öykülerde karşılaşma anında beliren duygu veya
düşüncelerle bunlara bağlı nitelemelerin öykülerin genel yapısıyla ne kadar
ilişkili olduğunu tespit etmeyi hedeflemektedir. Böylece bu çalışmada vapurda
karşılaşma anı kronotopunun modern Türk öyküsünde nasıl bir role sahip olduğu
sorusuna cevap aramaktadır.

Time and space have been one of the basic elements taken into considerationwhen examining the structure of fictional texts. Determining when and wherethe events described in the fiction take place is important in terms of makingsense of the text or placing it in context. While discussing the existence offictional texts, Mihail Bakhtin attributes a different and profound role to theelements of time and space. Because in his chronotope idea, fiction is evaluatedaround the focuses formed by the unity of time and space. Bakhtin talks aboutthe chronotopes that fundamentally affect the fiction and the chronotopes thatdirect the fiction. The encounter chronotope is also one of the chronotopes thatdirects the fiction and has a turning point effect. Based on Bakhtin's conceptof chronotope, this study examines the stories set on steamships in modernTurkish literature in terms of the chronotope of encounter. Steamships, whichare frequently seen in modern Turkish stories, make it possible to examine themaround Mihail Bakhtin's chronotope concept, in terms of their feature of beinglimited spaces that keep people together within a period of time. What is meantby encounter in the study is the moment when the steamship encounters thespace while leaving or approaching the port. The issue focused here is how themoment of encountering the space outside the steamship and on the steamshipaffects the fiction, in the context of the chronotope of encounter that Bakhtinclaims creates the turning points in the text. In the article, the tendency of thismoment of encounter to have a founding or changing effect on the story isdiscussed with reference to Turkish stories written in the 20th century. Forthis purpose, although the study accepts Bakhtin's view that the chronotope infiction can be close to reality or far from reality, it includes stories that dealwith the chronotope of encounter in a realistic way, and aims to determine howthe emotions or thoughts that appear at the moment of encounter in the storiesand the descriptions associated with them are related to the general structureof the stories. Thus, in this study, an answer is sought to the question of whatrole the chronotope of the encounter on the steamship has in the modernTurkish story.
