Abstract
This article is about some of the charities of Makbul Ibrahim Pasha Waqf inThessalonica, Kavala and other places. Ibrahim Pasha was one of the most remarkableamongst Ottoman Statesmen with his curious life. The essay introduces variouscharities of Ibrahim Pasha (dies 14-15 March 1536) across modern-day northernGreece which have, so far, been neglected in historical research. This research was doneso that the community service he provided through his waqf could be remembered andthat his heritage such as mosques and schools that keep his name alive to this day wouldnot be forgotten. The essay explores the information on the work of his waqf foundedby a charter in 937/1530-1531. The information relates to various charitablebuildings such as mosques, schools, quran schools, soup kitchens, dervish lodges, andto the personnel employed by these institutions, their duties and responsibilities as wellas their salaries, the sources of revenues that were donated to the waqf, and the use ofthe income generated by the waqf to fund expenditures. A review of the account bookswas also made in order to understand the situation of the charities a few centuries afterthe registration of the waqf charter. The research has found that most of the waqfinstitutions were instrumental in serving the communities in these lands during theOttoman Rule. The complexes comprised of the above-mentioned charitable buildingsin Thessalonica and Kavala catered to social and cultural needs with their vast resourcesthat were donated to them. With the end of the Ottoman Rule in the Balkans, theinstitutions that belonged to the Ibrahim Pasha Waqf suffered enormously as all theother waqfs that were the symbols of the Ottoman civilisation in those lands. Therefore,it was not possible to obtain information relating to the fate of some of his other charitiesand of the estates and assets of his waqf.
