CELAL BAYAR’IN ÖZEL ARŞİVİNDEN RUMELİ HİSARI’NIN 1953-1958 RESTORASYONU
RESTORATION OF RUMELI FORTRESS (RUMELİ HİSARI) 1953-1958 FROM CELAL BAYAR’S PRIVATE ARCHIVE

Abstract
The largest restoration project in Rumeli Fortress (Rumeli Hisarı), which is currently under restoration, was implemented in the 1950s. Although the restoration of this historical building is identified with the conquest of Istanbul, it had been on the agenda since the 1940s, the restoration preparations only started in 1953. The plans prepared for the 1953 restorations, when the 500th anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul will be celebrated, could not be implemented due to the impact of the Second World War and the priorities in the city development plan. After the change of government in Turkey in 1950, the President of the time, Celal Bayar, showed a special interest in the restoration of Rumeli Fortress. After the restoration, which lasted from 1953 to 1958, Rumeli Fortress was opened to visitors with a new arrangement on the 505th anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul. Through the new display, a Fatih (the period of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror) Museum was created within the fortress. Artifacts that shed light on this period were taken from various museums to be exhibited here. It was thought that Rumeli Fortress would become an important tourist center with this new exhibition, where artifacts belonging to the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, were brought to the fore. Rumeli Fortress File in the Celal Bayar Foundation Archive shows that the restoration was planned in meticulous detail. The examples reflected in the press are an indicator of the personal interest of President Bayar. In this study, the restoration of Rumeli Fortress, spanning the years 1953-1958, is evaluated around the file contained in Bayar's personal archive. The file in question is enriched with other archival documents including but not limited to, press resources and secondary sources
