Abstract
The Ottoman poetry tradition, which was mostly composed of scholar poets, maintained this feature from the beginning to the end through important representatives. One of these personalities who contributed to this tradition in various styles and genres is Mehmed Fā'iz Efendi (d. 1208/1794), who was a member of one of the distinguished ulema families of 18th century Istanbul. Fā'iz Efendi, who had different aspects such as science, poetry, calligraphy, served as central judges such as Üsküdar, Edirne, Medīna and Istanbul, and in the last period of his life, he also served as a nakību'l-eşrāf. Especially, this last higher rank he took is a valid indicator of his sayyidism apart from his position and degree in the protocol. Although it is reported in the collection of biographies that the poet, who uses the pseudonym of Fā'iz in his poems, has a Turkish divan, the divan mentioned is not in our hands today. In addition, a poetry mecmua belonging to him is registered at Istanbul University Rare Books Library number TY3710. This mecmua, which contains poems written by Fā'iz Efendi himself, as well as other poems belonging to first-class poets, has the type and number of poems that will suffice to get an idea about his poetry and literary personality. Turkish poems belonging to Fā'iz Efendi in the mecmua; a mi'rājiyye (poem about Prophet Muhammed’s ascension) composing of 121 couplets, consists of tebriknāmes (congratulatory poems) addressed to the sultan and other statesmen for various occasions such as enthronement, feast, birth, appointment, and nazires (response poems) on ghazals written by the great masters of Ottoman poetry such as Bākī, Yahyā, Nef'ī, Rāgıb Pasha, Salāhī, Sālim. In this study, the biography of Fā'iz Efendi, his literary personality and his Turkish poems in the aforementioned mecmua are included.
