THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE OTTOMAN MADRASA TRADITION IN ÜSKÜDAR: THE RUM MEHMED PASHA MADRASA AND ITS MUDARRISES

Abstract
The foundations established in Üsküdar had an important role in the development of the city's population. Mosques, masjids, madrasas, dervish lodges, and soup kitchens built through the foundations provided both the physical and economic development of the city, which in the end led to population growth. Especially social complex structures have contributed greatly to the economic and social development of cities. In this context, the social complex built by Rum Mehmed Pasha plays an important role in the development of Üsküdar. This complex, which also led to the establishment of the neighborhood known as İmâret-i Mehmed Pasha, is one of the main factors in shaping the cultural history of Üsküdar. The construction of the complex, which is in the neighborhood named after it, above the Şemsi Pasha Mosque, was started in 876 (1471-72) by Rum Mehmed Pasha, who was the grand vizier for a short time during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmed and was completed a year after his death. The Rum Mehmed Pasha Madrasa in Üsküdar has a very important place in the history of culture and education as an institution that employed a significant number of mudarrises for the history of Üsküdar from the late 15th century until the 18th century. As far as we can trace from the various sources we have, the first mudarris appointments began in the late 16th century starting from the 1580s and dating back to 1732. In this study, the biographies of 138 mudarrises who served in the Rum Mehmed Pasha Madrasa from the 16th century to the middle of the 18th century were examined, and their career steps developed in the form of mudarris and kadi were evaluated.
